Grassy Lake is one of the few areas in the South that escaped the widespread clear-cutting which occurred in the early 1900's. Upland ridges and slopes support a wide variety of massive hardwoods, but Hempstead County Hunting Club's real treasure lies in the cypress swamp below. Water levels are carefully monitored and controlled to insure perpetuation of this old growth cypress swamp.
