WHAT Conservation Seed Program
Now is the time of year to make plans for your conservation seed plantings during 2000. We hope that you will participate this year in the conservation of our wildlife resources in Texas. Last year through our efforts and those participating in this program over 45,000 acres were planted for Texas wildlife: a most impressive accomplishment for the private sector’s concern for wildlife and wetlands.
How the Conservation Seed Program Works
WHAT coordinates deliveries of the seed from various production facilities across the nation, and when your requested seed becomes available, it will be shipped to your chosen location. We cannot fill all the orders we receive due to limited availability; however, we will do our best to fill your request. The earlier you make your request, the more likely it will be for us to fill your order. Orders are usually shipped by the truckload (approximately 858, 50lb. bags); however, if you do not need this amount of seed, we will try to coordinate your order with other conservationists in your area. Corn, sorghum, sudan, sunflower, and forage sorghum are currently available for spring plantings and winter wheat is available for fall/winter plantings.
The seed is free, but we do request that you make a donation to cover the handling and freight costs which is approximately $3.00/bag. The seed you receive may possess a lower germination than regular certified seed; however, there is sufficient germination to supply excellent food plots for waterfowl and wildlife. The seed has been chemically treated and should not be used for livestock or wildlife feed. WHAT will inform you of the delivery time in your area, and you will be expected to donate sufficient funds for the delivery and handling of the seed. Freight and handling charges may vary due to the location of the production facility.
